In Yin yoga, the poses are held for a long period of time — typically three to five minutes or longer — to target the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, rather than focus on the muscles. As a result, the poses are more passive holds with little active engagement of the muscles. A Yin/Yang yoga practice often begins with yin poses.
Developed in India, Yang yoga is what the Western world thinks of as yoga — Hatha and Ashtanga yoga asanas and vinyasas that warm the body and stretch and strengthen the muscles. Yin/Yang yoga typically includes the yang portion of practice in the second half of class.
By combining the two styles of yoga, Yin/Yang yoga improves energy and fitness while promoting relaxation and healing.
Flow yoga is the general term given to any style of yoga asana in which the practitioner moves dynamically from one posture immediately into another, following the breath. This continuous flow of movement and breath generates a meditative state, encouraging practitioners to let go of thought and focus on experience of the present moment. In flow yoga, each movement into or out of a posture is timed with an inhalation or an exhalation in a choreographed sequence.
This is a slow paced class, focused on joint mobility, and circulation. The class can be done in a chair if required, and is suitable for a variety of people from very fit and active, to less mobile. The sessions are particularly great for those who have joint issues (ie Arthritis, joint replacement), as well as those who seek to improve on range of motion & flexibility in all areas of the body. This is a great option for those with back issues as well!
Sculpt is a dynamic & energetic class that focuses on a combination of strength, cardio, and stretching. It incorporates slow holds with quick bursts or sequences of more challenging fitness-focused movements. Often in Sculpt we use hand weights, blocks and/or bands to enhance the practice. This is a sweaty session that is sure to keep your muscles firing and your body limber.
Yin Yoga is a slower-paced, more meditative version of the popular physical and spiritual discipline of yoga. In Yin yoga, the poses are held for a long period of time (typically three to five minutes or longer) to target the connective tissues (such as the ligaments) rather than focusing on the muscles. As a result, the asanas are more passive holds, with little muscular engagement.
